“HOW DARE THEY!” This phrase should really be the title of this course rather than Home Defense. In 30+ years of being a cop, I heard this phrase used to express the feelings of countless victims of home burglary, robbery, or other dark deeds committed by people against other people inside their own homes.

The next phrase I heard as frequently was “I feel so violated”. Once someone has entered your home, your sanctuary, and committed an act of aggression or theft against you and your loved ones, it is as if they were the victim of sexual assault. Family heirlooms knocked around and broken, someone having gone through your dresser, knocking pictures off the wall, all the things that occur inside the house that leave you feeling as if these acts were committed against your person. Now take it to the next level. Someone has entered your home with the intent to do you or someone you love harm.
In Home Defense, we’re going to talk about how to better secure your home, be aware of your surroundings, planning vs. paranoia, and most importantly, what your legal and moral rights are when it comes to an intruder in your home.
For the next few hours we are going to explore this issue with the hope that you will understand your legal rights in protecting yourself and your loved ones in the home. We will discuss the moral implications in using deadly force and how it is different than protection outside the home.
We hope to give you planning ideas. We hope to give you options and answers to questions about home defense. We hope you never find yourself in this position.
However we recognize that “Hope is not a Strategy.” Let us take you beyond hoping it doesn’t happen to you, and help you plan for success.
